The Sports Facilities Building at the University of Cyprus is a distinctive architectural project that elegantly integrates both indoor and outdoor sports areas into a unified design. The structure is defined by its robust, singular volume, which houses all the sports facilities, contrasting with the surrounding sports fields. A key feature of the design is the slender roof with exposed trusses creating a striking visual element, particularly as viewed from the lower campus road, setting the building apart from other structures on campus.
Internally, the building features floating bodies that guide and define the user experience within the larger space, contributing to the overall elegance of the design. The project was the result of a competition initiated by the University of Cyprus in 2001. Its innovative design and high-quality construction earned it the Cyprus State Prize in 2010 and a nomination for the Mies Van der Rohe European Prize in 2011.
An elevated walkway visually and physically connects the indoor and outdoor facilities of the project, while also enhancing movement across the campus and contributing to a cohesive campus environment.
